The village of Bot River lies in the base of the Houw Hoek Mountains, close to the N2 in the direction of Walker Bay and the Garden Route. The river, from which the village gets its name, flows through the valley, surrounded by majestic mountains and covered in fynbos and renosterveld, in an area of historical wine farms, fields of wheat and canola, olive groves, stock farming and other crops.
Bot River originally served as a spot for bartering butter with the Khoi-Khoi tribes and the river was attributed with the name ‘butter’. The Van der Stel Pass lies between Bot River and Vyeboom, a beautiful pass that takes one via the Theewaterskloof Dam, and part of the Overberg that is filled with beautiful scenery, flowers, birds and wines.
